Education of medical students in the field of FASD

A pilot educational program on the issue of Spectrum of Fetal Alcohol Disorders (FASD) is addressed to medical students. It is planned to implement a pilot educational project at the Medical University of Warsaw, the aim of which will be to provide knowledge on the harmful effects of alcohol consumed by a pregnant woman on the development of the fetus.

• Dissemination of knowledge in the field of FASD issues among students of the last years of all faculties of the Medical University of Warsaw.
• Expanding knowledge on the optimal FASD diagnostic criteria and appropriate therapy.
• Awareness of the need for a multidimensional diagnosis resulting from the spectrum of alcohol disorders and damage.
• Familiarizing students with the spectrum of disorders caused by the consumption of even a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy on the developing fetus and its negative consequences for the child's entire life.
• Being sensitive to the harmful effects of alcohol on the development of the fetus and child.
• Raising awareness of the need to inform pregnant women and those planning it about the need to abstain during pregnancy.
• Participation and acquired knowledge in the educational project by students of medical faculties will significantly affect the implementation of appropriate education of the entire society in the field of harmful consequences of consuming even a small amount of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy, as well as the period of breastfeeding and its negative effects on life, health and development of the child.
• Substantive activities include the development of an educational brochure for students in the field of FASD and taking into account the content of the brief intervention.
• It is also planned to distribute the educational brochure prepared as part of the project in antenatal schools, maternity wards as well as primary health care (POZ) and specialist clinics.
